While a portion of the Soldiers' Monument Commission is working hard on fundraising, another group is working hard to develop this community-wide program, tentatively envisioned as a three day event.
September 10th, Thursday: Kick-off program TBA
September 11th, Friday: Sunset Tour of the graves of Civil War soldiers buried in Forest View cemetery. Virginia Shultz-Charette will discuss information she has uncovered on many of the soldiers whose lives she has been studying in preparation for a book of biographical sketches of the men on our monument.
September 12th, Saturday: The really big day!!!
10:30-11:30 Rick Spencer, musician/musicologist will present his program "The Greatest Hits of the Civil War" at the library. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Beardsley and Memorial Library.
12:30-1:45 Monument ceremony which includes two distinguished speakers, one who is from the National Park Service and works at the Appomattox Court House Battleground (a special thanks to the Connecticut Civil War Round Table for sharing him with us) and the other, a prominent historian and museum expert who often uses our monument as a part of his talks! In addition, we hope to find as many descendants of men listed on our monument to honor during the ceremony. Plus, there will be a special "cameo" appearance of Connecticut's Civil War governor, the Honorable William Buckingham!
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!!!
We will be negotiating a program for the afternoon, TBA
PLUS, THE REALLY BIG DEAL!
2:30-4:30 Civil War Dance Lessons prior to the evening's Gala Event (time TBA) at the Elks Club- a Civil War Ball! There will be a charge for the dance which includes the lessons, any profits go to the Soldiers' Monument Restoration Fund!
Never seen a Civil War ball? The one featured here in this clip is one that two of our commission members, Deb and Lynn Kessler, attended. The musicians are "Spare Parts", the group we will be using for our ball!

Full details will be available in the May issue of the SoMo Sentinel!
