Restoration Fund

For the past several years, the Soldiers' Monument Commission has been attempting to raise the community's social awareness of the beauty of the Civil War Monument and Memorial Park on Crown Street. Along with this emphasis on the structure and grounds, we also have raised the need to raise funding for the on-going maintenance and repairs to the 103 year old structure.

The commission several years ago received professional structural engineering recommendations and estimates regarding the necessary work needed to complete restorations of the main structure, the gateway, and the ground in the amount of approximately $300,000. Individual contributions and municipal directed fund raising efforts have raised more than $80,000 to date.

Restoration work started in the mid 1980s addressed some of the structural concerns that had been noted as early as the 1960s. Engineers more recently have express concerns that the structural integrity of this historic monument and its future public use may be endangered if some of the work suggested is not addressed in the near future.

In addition to seeking special federal, state, and local funding, the commission is again seeking local donations and re-energizing our campaign to move the work forward. Town officials have suggested additional public matching money could be earmarked in bonding for some of the renovations once donation levels have achieved certain benchmarks. Additionally, the commission is working with grant writers to pursue all alternatives possible for raising money.

We have been engaged in on-going projects of public recognition and awareness of the monument's value to the community. Recently the monument and Memorial Park have been the setting for plays, concerts, picnics, weddings, birthday parties, and Easter Egg Hunts. In the last year Civil War Memorial road signs have been erected directed travelers to the monument that is the focal point on the town's seal.

Dedicated in September 1890, the monument continues today to serve as a reminder of the sacrifice made by local residents during our nation's Civil War. Situated on top of Camp Hill in the center of town, the locations services as a place for reflection and rest, has been visited by local school classes, and been the locations of various veteran remembrances ceremonies.

Your individual donations will preserve our town's historic treasure.
